The Art Gardner

Something Kind of Wonderful

Today I finally went to visit Wonderroot Community Arts Center. Chris Appleton, the Executive Director/Founder, gave me a tour of the facility. Situated in a ramshackle house on Memorial Drive, it’s not a fancy place, but it’s clear that the people who created it have a genuine love for the arts and want to share that love with the community. It’s a tremendous resource for fledging artists–for a $10 monthly membership (or $60 for a year) you get unlimited access to facilities such as a ceramics studio with kiln and wheel, a darkroom, a recording studio, and a digital media lab complete with several Macs loaded with CS and video editing software. Additionally, members can take classes and workshops for free. Classes in March include Photoshop, Illustrator, Final Cut Pro, Bookbinding, and Poetry. I am planning on joining and taking advantage of some of the classes asap.

Also–for those interested in pursuing a career in nonprofit–I found a link on Philanthropy Today about a live discussion happening tomorrow at noon eastern time: Hotline: Advice on Navigating a Nonprofit Career. I won’t make it, because I will be at a class at the Foundation Center. If anyone out there joins, let me know how it was!
